Shuffle off to Buffalo May 8 and 9 with a tour and stay in our neighboring city! The adventure takes off from the Penfield Community Center and then travels to meet the guide from Explore Buffalo for an architectural tour of some of Buffalo’s most iconic structures. The city had over 60 millionaires at the turn of the century, which is not lost in the many beautiful buildings and parks that have been preserved for over a hundred years.

Lunch is next at the popular Pearl St. Brewery, set in the building that was originally built in 1870. After lunch, a personal tour at The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, a museum on the shore of Lake Erie in Buffalo, New York. It is home to several decommissioned US Naval vessels, including the Cleveland-class cruiser USS Little Rock, the Fletcher-class destroyer USS The Sullivans, and the submarine USS Croaker. Along with the ships, there are a variety of smaller vehicles, vessels, and aircraft on display.

It will then be time to head to the hotel for a short rest at the Hotel Henry before dinner. Hotel Henry is located in the historical Henry Hobson Richardson Complex, or the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, as it was originally called. The gothic structure started construction in 1870 and was completed almost 20 years later. It was a state-of-the-art facility when it was built, incorporating the most modern ideas in psychiatric treatment. The design of the buildings as well as the restorative grounds, designed by famed landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted, were intended to complement the innovations in psychiatric care practiced at this facility. Today, the Richardson Olmsted Campus has been transformed into a cultural amenity for the city, beginning with the newly open Hotel Henry Urban Resort Conference Center and 100 Acres: The Kitchens at Hotel Henry, both nestled within the iconic Towers Building and two flanking buildings (about one-third of the Campus).

Dinner is on your own but transportation to and from the Anchor Bar, the home of the original chicken wing, or Ulrich’s, Buffalo’s oldest tavern, will be available as well as dining at 100 Acres: Kitchen at Hotel Henry.

The second day, breakfast at Hotel Henry will get everyone pumped up and ready for our private tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright Martin House Complex, followed by lunch at the Buffalo Yacht Club and a private tour of Wright’s famous boat house.

The overnight excursion cost is $240 per person for double occupancy and $280 for single. The fee includes transportation, all tours, one breakfast, one lunch. There are limited spots available. Please contact the Penfield Recreation Department 585-340-8655, option 1 to reserve a spot.
